“..Benedict Kloeckner takes on the cello role for these works and sounds terrific. Howard Blake himself handles the piano part with dramatic credibility.
, that is Brahmsian…that is Mendelssohnian, etc.” The works hold their own as contemporary music with a pronounced Blakean signature affixed. There is nothing banally “new age” sounding to them either. The music is filled with inventive flourishes that evince a fertile creative mind at work.
The piano parts occasionally step into the spotlight but mostly this is music that gives the cellist a chance to take a singing melodic lead. Kloeckner responds with an extraordinarily vibrant tone and rhapsodic lucidity…”

”With an unusual but intelligent compiled program (cello sonatas by Richard Straus, Francis Poulenc, and Wolfgang Rihm), the young cellist Benedict Kloeckner presented together with his experienced companion, José Gallardo, on Genuin. Settled in expression between rousing drive and soulful lyricism, a dialogue-rich, color-varied program is concluded that the cellist as technically well versed and highly musical performer identifies (GEN 14313). “Remy Franck
Rainer Klaas
“next to all the technical mastery Klöckner's game offers a deep understanding between impetuous verve and great tenderness alternating gestures of this music. Very rarely you have heard the transition cycles from 1 to 2 sentence as enchanting as in the game of this cellist: almost like a sudden freezing of the beauty of poetry .. “
Gerhard Anders
“… it is the cello quartet version that is especially winning and finds Klöckner playing with a commanding spontaneity to match even the finest orchestral versions.”
Rezension in The Strad, Joanne Talbot,
!..Undoubtedly that is because we are presented with a passionately engaged performance by a young cellist, born in 1989, with a fervid, beautiful sound in front of a lively string orchestra, and equally dramatic string quartet. I have to say that with the latter especially, the climaxes, once supported if not absolutely engendered by the orchestra, sound here a little forced. And of course we should respect the many wonderful performances of the original work, beginning in my collection with the Casals with the Prades Festival Orchestra, and including recordings such as the popular Yo-Yo Ma with Colin Davis, the older Starker, the recent Maisky, and the slightly less satisfactory Rostropovich with the London Symphony. What this new recording offers is a beautifully recorded full sound, and fine, rhythmically powerful, passionate performances in arrangements many listeners will not previously have heard.”
